Press Release
Protect-Hijab and Supporters Lobby MEPs in Strasbourg
On the 21st February 2005, Written
Declaration on religious rights and freedoms was launched at the
European Parliament in Strasbourg, with a deadline to gain the support
of 367 MEPs by the 21st May 2005.
In the days running up to this deadline, Protect Hijab will team up
with the UNITED SIKHS in Strasbourg to lobby directly outside the EU
Parliament.
This will be a unique opportunity for MEPs to meet supporters of the
campaign face to face and to discuss the implications of religious
bans in the European community. This shows the commitment of Protect
Hijab and its supporters to conduct open dialogue on the issues and to
listen to opposition and concerns.
“Muslim women from around Europe will be attending this lobby and
joining with those of other religions. The aim is to promote a
peaceful dialogue with our political representatives. Muslim women
only wish to practice their religion as active members of the European
Community.”
Eman Penny, Protect Hijab’s European Affairs Officer and Acting
Co-ordinator
The Assembly for the Protection of Hijab (Protect Hijab) continues its
campaign to ensure the religious rights of Muslim women in Europe and
across the world to practice their religion without prejudice. Since
the French Government banned religious symbols in state schools in
2004, other European countries have followed suit in this worrying
display of discrimination, affecting many religious communities; and
is contrary to the fundamental precept of freedom and tolerance in
European society.
Supporters for The Assembly for the Protection of Hijab include: The
Mayor of London, Liberty, National Assembly Against Racism, Federation
of Islamic Organisations in Europe, Islamic Forum Europe, Muslim
Council of Britain, Muslim Association of Britain, Federation of
Student Islamic Societies in the UK and Ireland, United Against
Racism, De Raad Voor en Religies te Amsterdam and Islam Online.
Protect Hijab would like to thank these and other committed
individuals, including MEPs Caroline Lucas (Green), Sarah Ludford
(Liberal Democrats), Claude Moraes (Labour), Phillip Bushill-Matthews
(Conservative) and Alain Lipietz (French Green), who have dedicated
their time and efforts to this campaign.
Support our campaign not only to protect the Hijab but also to
Protect the religious rights of all individuals in Europe.
