Press Release
Multi-cultural School Allows Freedom of
Dress
On the back of the recent controversy
surrounding young Shabina Begum and her desire to wear the Jilbab
to school, a community college in Loughborough, Leicestershire has
taken the unprecedented step in allowing their uniform to
encompass all religious dress.
Burleigh Community College caters for GCSE
and A-level students and recently introduced uniform designs
ranging from the traditional blouses and trousers, to the Islamic
Hijab and Jilbab.
Principle John Smith stated that: “Burleigh
is a community college which serves a very diverse local
community. We would find it very difficult to do anything but
respect the values, ethos and culture diversity that brings a
richness to our community.”
All state schools are bound by the same
health and safety regulations and this move shows that arguments
put forward for banning attire such as the Jilbab on health and
safety grounds are unfounded. Burleigh Community College has
reached the happy medium by showing respect to all of its
students.
“This is a greatly encouraging move made by a
school which caters for young people of all religious groups. It
is an example that should be followed by all, as it encourages
diversity by giving each individual the right to choose a uniform
that they are comfortable in, while adhering to the school
colours” said Rajnaara Akhtar of Pro-Hijab.
