Press Release
Assembly for the Protection of Hijab Unequivocally Rejects Call to
Abandon the Hijab
Protect-Hijab strongly rejects the calls made by Dr Zaki Badawi for
Muslim women to abandon the Hijab due to the threat of anti-Muslim
attacks. In the current climate, it is crucial for the minority Muslim
community to maintain our beliefs and uphold our human rights, rather
than submitting to the danger emanating from some misguided members of
our society who blame all Muslims for terrorism.
“While Dr Badawi’s concerns are real and understood, I think this is
the worse possible way of dealing with the problems we now face. We
need to educate people so they understand Islam and reject racial and
religious prejudices, not compromise our legitimate beliefs and
practice of Islam” states Rajnaara Akhtar, Chair of Protect-Hijab.
There can be no doubt about the obligation of Hijab in Islam. The
Islamic scholars world-wide unanimously agree on this. Protect-Hijab
is concerned by the manner in which the attacks in London are being
unashamedly used as a smokescreen by individuals to attack aspects of
the Islamic faith to serve individual agendas. Dr Badawi’s position
will aide these individuals and only serves to undermine the
importance of Hijab in Islam.
Protect-Hijab calls on all Muslim women to continue wearing the Hijab
and take sensible precautions to avoid potentially dangerous
situations, such as not traveling alone and being extra vigilant.
Britain is a place of tolerance and Protect-Hijab feels it is
necessary now more than ever to educate society on the issue of the
Hijab, which requires all Muslim women to speak out and unite against
the causes of these racist attacks, not give into them by abandoning
our beliefs and hiding away and denying our identities as Muslims.
