Press Release
Scottish Women Support Hijab
Protect-Hijab announces the following on behalf of a Scottish
community where women will precede International Hijab Solidarity Day
(September 3rd) with a ‘Headscarf Day’ on August 19th in solidarity
with Muslim women.
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF SOMEONE CAME UP TO YOU IN THE STREET AND SPAT
IN YOUR FACE?
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU WERE
SURROUNDED BY A GROUP OF PEOPLE SHOUTING ABUSE AT YOU?
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU WERE TOO
SCARED TO LET YOUR CHILDREN GO OUT TO PLAY?
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU WERE TOLD
THAT THIS WAS HAPPENING REGULARLY TO A GROUP OF PEOPLE IN THIS
COUNTRY?
Angry? Embarrassed? Ashamed? Scared?
Or would you just ignore the fact that since the dreadful bombings in
London many Muslim women have increasingly been subjected to incidents
of racial hatred and now live in a climate of fear?
HEADSCARF DAY - 19 AUGUST 2005
Many Muslim women choose to wear the Hijab or headscarf and in
exercising this freedom of choice they become easy targets for the
perpetrators of racial hatred. But what if we felt so disgusted with
the actions of this bigoted minority group that we felt we had to do
something to support these women? What if WE ALL decided to
wear a headscarf to demonstrate our belief in the right to choose and
our support for a group of women who, just like us, want to go about
their daily lives feeling that they and their children are safe and
secure?
It is because we would like to show our support that we are proposing
that Friday 19 August should be HEADSCARF DAY and we
would like to invite you and any like-minded friends and acquaintances
from any cultural or religious background to join us by wearing a
headscarf when out in public that day.
We have the support of the Assembly
for Protection of Hijab (Protect Hijab) and hopefully will be
contributing to their conference on 3 September at Kensington Town
Hall in London. This date is also International Hijab Solidarity
Day. For information on Protect Hijab go to
www.prohijab.net and for
information on International Hijab Solidarity Day contact
international@prohijab.net
We realise that at such short notice we may only reach enough people
to provide localised demonstrations of support on 19 August. Our aim
however, is to contact as many people as possible in order to declare
3 September 2005 to be National Headscarf Day.
Please pass this on to your friends
wherever they are.
