Press Release
Protect-Hijab Condemns Niqab ban at Imperial
In a recent revision of its dress code, the Imperial College’s
decision to drop the ban on ‘hoodies’ while maintaining the ban on the
Muslim women’s Niqab is shocking and unacceptable.
“Imperial College has cited security reasons for the ban on the face
veil, but has not substantiated its claim that the Niqab poses any
serious threat. It is perfectly viable for the college to implement
security measures that allow the ID of students in Niqab to be checked
while maintaining their right to cover in the veil if they so choose,”
stated Rajnaara Akhtar, Chair of Protect-Hijab.
She added: “This step is creating a climate of fear and ostracising
the Muslim student body. It will only serve to create divisions
between different student groups”.
Protect-Hijab urges Imperial College to once again revise its dress
code and remove this indirectly discriminatory policy.
