Protect-Hijab: Blanket Ban on the Niqab is Unhelpful
Protect-Hijab: Blanket Ban on the Niqab is Unhelpful
Protect-Hijab views the guidelines from the Department for Education
and Skills (DfES) on school uniforms, which effectively promote a
blanket ban on the Niqab, as unhelpful where issues of religious dress
and respect for individual differences are concerned.
Rajnaara Akhtar, Chair of Protect-Hijab states: “Issues of religious
dress are sensitive to those concerned, especially young girls. There
has to be sensitivity and flexibility from both sides where school
uniform policies are concerned.”
There has been only one single court case surrounding a pupil’s right
to wear the Niqab in school, and this was not enough to involve the
DfSE. The publicity surrounding that case has clearly had an adverse
effect as it has made the issue far bigger than it is in actual fact.
Only a tiny number of school girls choose to wear the Niqab and this
choice should be respected and its application should be encouraged to
be sensible and flexible by all concerned.
A blanket ban victimises young girls who would wish to wear this
religious dress, and certainly impedes their human right to religious
freedom.
