Protect-Hijab Encourages Imperial College to Engage with Students on Security Issues

Imperial College's recent decision to impose a new dress code on the college campus in the interests of security has given rise to calls of discrimination against Muslim women who wear the veil. The new code prohibits the any item of clothing which partially or completely covers the face.

"Security is a big issue in the current climate, but it must be kept in context with the need to maintain unity between different student communities. A ban on face coverings would have a disproportionate effect on Muslim women who wear the veil out of religious conviction. We encourage the college to deal with such students sensitively and make arrangements for identity checks which ensure security is maintained while also respecting religious beliefs", stated Rajnaara Akhtar, Chair of Protect Hijab.

Protect-Hijab believes small steps such as enclosed check area's can be used to ascertain the identity of women in the face veil, of which there are only a tiny number in the student population. This will ensure the needs of both the students and security are met.
