Hijab - an obligation |
|
Holy Quran
Al-Ahzab:
(59)
O Prophet! Tell thy wives and thy daughters and
the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go
abroad). That will be better , that so they may be recognized and not annoyed.
Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.

ASSALLAM ALAYKUM
FRIENDS.
FOLLOWING THE DREADFUL JULY BOMBINGS IN LONDON THERE HAS BEEN MUCH MEDIA
COVERAGE OF THE RESULTANT POLITICAL AND SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE
ATTACKS.
WE HAVE HEARD DEBATES ABOUT
NATIONAL SECURITY, MULTI-CULTURALISM AND
RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM TO NAME A FEW. THERE IS HOWEVER, ONE ISSUE
WHERE THE MEDIA COVERAGE HAS BEEN AT BEST SPORADIC YET IT HAS
IMPLICATIONS FOR ALL THE WOMEN IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.
MANY MUSLIM WOMEN IN THIS COUNTRY EXERCISE THEIR FREEDOM OF CHOICE TO
WEAR THE HIJAB. IN DOING SO, THEY AND THEIR CHILDREN BECOME EASILY
RECOGNISABLE TARGETS FOR THE PERPETRATORS OF RELIGIOUS HATRED AND
INTOLERANCE. WE FIRMLY BELIEVE IT IS *YOUR RIGHT, YOUR FREEDOM AND YOUR
CHOICE *TO WEAR THE HIJAB AND ARE APPALLED THAT THAT MANY MUSLIM WOMEN
AND CHILDREN NOW LIVE IN A CLIMATE OF FEAR. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT
AFFECTS *ALL* WOMEN IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. ALL WOMEN SHOULD HAVE THE
RIGHT TO LIVE WITHOUT FEAR REGARDLESS OF THEIR CULTURAL, RELIGIOUS OR
ETHNIC BACKGROUND WE AND SHOULD DO OUR BEST TO ENSURE THAT WOMEN ARE NOT
SCARED TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES OR LET THEIR CHILDREN OUT TO PLAY.
THERE ARE PROBABLY MANY NON-MUSLIM WOMEN WHO FEEL THIS ISSUE IS NOTHING
TO DO WITH THEM-BUT IT IS. NO WOMAN SHOULD BE TOO SCARED TO LEAVE HER
HOME, NO WOMAN SHOULD FEEL THREATENED WHEN OUT IN THE STREET AND NO
WOMAN SHOULD FEEL TOO INTIMIDATED TO EXERCISE HER FREEDOM OF CHOICE. THE
MAIN REASON MANY NON-MUSLIM WOMEN KNOW LITTLE ABOUT THIS ISSUE IS DUE TO
THE LACK OF SUBSTANTIVE REPORTING IN THE NATIONAL MEDIA. ANECDOTAL
EVIDENCE ALSO SUGGESTS THAT IT IS ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF ASSAULTS
THAT GET REPORTED.
FEAR OF REPRISAL IS JUST AS
INTIMIDATING AS THE THREAT OF VIOLENCE.
A SMALL GROUP OF US DECIDED THAT SOMETHING HAD TO BE DONE, BOTH TO
INFORM AND RAISE AWARENESS OF THIS ISSUE AMONGST NON-MUSLIM WOMEN AND TO
SHOW OUR SUPPORT FOR MUSLIM WOMEN WHO CHOOSE TO WEAR THE HIJAB. WE
CONTACTED *PROTECT HIJAB* AND SUGGESTED THAT WE HOLD OUR OWN *HEADSCARF
DAY* ON 19 AUGUST. WE CONTACTED OUR FRIENDS, ACQUAINTANCES AND
COLLEAGUES FROM ALL CULTURAL, ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS AND ASKED
THEM TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT BY WEARING A HEADSCARF ON THIS DAY. WE HAD AN
OVERWHELMINGLY POSITIVE RESPONSE FROM INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS BOTH
LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY. WE HAD PHONE CALLS OF SUPPORT FROM FRANCE, THE
UNITED STATES AND AUSTRALIA. RADIO BRADFORD ASKED US FOR AN INTERVIEW
WHICH WAS BROADCAST A FEW DAYS BEFORE OUR EVENT.
WHERE WE LIVE IN SOUTH WEST SCOTLAND, MANY SUPPORTERS ENTHUSIASTICALLY
WORE THEIR HEADSCARVES FOR THE DAY AND AGREED TO HAVE THEIR PHOTOGRAPHS
TAKEN. THE LEVEL OF SUPPORT WAS SUCH THAT SOME WOMEN WHO NORMALLY
DISLIKE BEING PHOTOGRAPHED AGREED TO IT ON THIS OCCASION. THESE
PHOTOGRAPHS AND OUR ORIGINAL MESSAGE HAVE BEEN FORWARDED TO PROTECT
HIJAB AND ARE AVAILABLE FOR YOU TO SEE TODAY.
WE HOPE THAT ALL OF YOU AT THE CONFERENCE TODAY FEEL THAT YOU HAVE OUR
SUPPORT FOR YOUR RIGHT, CHOICE AND FREEDOM TO WEAR THE HIJAB. ALTHOUGH
THIS IS JUST A SMALL CONTRIBUTION ON OUR PART WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO KNOW
THAT WE TOO ARE WEARING OUR HEADSCARVES TODAY. IT IS OUR AIM HOWEVER, TO
MAKE
*HEADSCARF DAY* A ANNUAL
NATIONAL EVENT TO COINCIDE WITH FUTURE HIJAB SOLIDARITY DAYS.
FINALLY, KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE AND THAT YOU HAVE THE SUPPORT OF A
GROWING NUMBER OF NON-MUSLIM WOMEN WHO ENDORSE YOUR RIGHT TO GO ABOUT
YOUR DAILY LIVES WITHOUT FEAR AND INTIMIDATION.
HELEN, SALLY, ANN AND FRIENDS
