O Prophet! Tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better , that so they may be recognized and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.

Letters of support

As-salaam-alaikum

I am a British/Muslim, I want to assure you that Muslim women have the right to freedom of religion and to manifest and practice of Islam- This is very clear in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights- which states that:

Article 18: “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.” Therefore, any laws introduced against the hijab are a violation of International law and basic human rights laws.

Let me make it absolutely clear, Islamic dress is one of several rights granted to Muslim women. The modest clothing is worn in complete obedience, respect and love for Allah (GOD) - it is not a sign or indication of oppression against Muslim women. Both men and women in the religion of Islam have different rights and obligations- but all submit to Allah (God). Therefore, I would like to express my full backing and support for the excellent work you are doing to ensure Muslim women’s rights are fully upheld in the United Kingdom.

Thank you

Dear Sisters,

I discovered your website, I think from MCB, and would like to thank you for the excellent service that you are providing!! It is really inspiring to hear and see the stories of women who give such value to the hijab, especially when its' status is being placed under threat. I especially like the links to stories of hijab bans around the world, and really appreciate the site being well maintained & up to date!!

Jazakallah Khairun, you have brought tears to my eyes, really heart warming!!

Hi I am an Arab Muslim living in Houston, Texas, and I think that this site is awesome, and I give props to my Muslim Sisters. I am currently writing a persuasive speech about how the French ban against the headscarf is unjust and, not a separation of church and state. This site has really inspired me to think about Hijab, and inshallah allah yehdini
and I will wear it. Thank you so much for standing up and I really hope to join if I ever come to France. If we don't do something who will?

Hello,

I am not a Muslim, however I am deeply concerned about the erosion of human rights, especially religious ones.

What comes next? do we do away with the cross and chain, the beard, Jewish hats etc.

Stand up sisters, be heard, be brave...you are all in my thoughts.

RE: Cennet Doganay

This story only recently reached me through a teen magazine-Teen Vogue. I was so shocked. I live in the U.S., where this sort of thing should never happen, but seeing what happened to Cennet kind of makes me worry. I'm not Muslim, and it's true that I personally don't have to worry about the issue, but what is being done in France is wrong. I feel so angry that there isn't much I can do, because I want to help so badly. Maybe part of it is because I'm at that same age. I'll be 15 in July and I just can't imagine having to go through all that myself. I mean, just the thought of going against my teacher terrifies me, let alone going against the government. What Cennet
has done is incredibly empowering. It lets me know that if one girl my age can affect an entire country, just maybe, if we all bonded together, we could change the world.
Thanks for supporting Cennet.

As-salaamu alaikum,

I am sincerely delighted to see this website and this movement. It is about time we spoke out loud and clear about what hijab is and how vital it is to be able to live our faith no matter where in the world we are. I wish you all the best in your campaign to make religious freedom a right of all persons in the European Union and hope that this is spread all over the globe. May God bless you and give you strength and courage.

Dear ProHijab,

The UK, Germany, USA, France, Italy, the Netherlands etc. have all failed to celebrate or even tolerate the freedom Muslim, Christian, Jewish and any man or woman has to dress as she or he pleases, whether in accordance with a religious teaching or not.

It is a question of choice and freedom. These bans claim to help empower women, they do not. They claim that the bans are not anti-Muslim racism, clearly they are racist. They claim that the bans will help Muslims to integrate into the culture, they will not.

If these bans were not racism-in-disguise then the bans would have to include (as the French have) all religious symbols including Yarmulkes, crosses etc. If these bans aim to release Muslim women from oppression then answer first: is the hijab the source of oppression? If i wear a crown does it make me a queen? Of course not. And second: If a woman wearing the hijab wants to work in the civil service or teach or attend school and she is prohibited from doing so because of her choice of clothing, the government stops these women from achieving their dreams, stops them from becoming self-sufficient and stops them from finding a place within the culture on their own terms. These bans are outrageous and ridiculous. It is disgraceful to send children home from school.

In my university every year there is a little uproar when new students and faculty notice that in the gym facility there are hours reserved for women only. "Discrimination" cry some arguing that this violates the principle of equal treatment for men and women and equal treatment for all religious backgrounds in the school.

But the truth is that in order to not discriminate sometimes you have to make special allowances, in this case time reserved for women only, so that women (Muslim or not) may feel comfortable. Yes, it is treating one group, women, differently than men but when I look around and see women in hijab lifting barbells, riding exercise bikes, doing chin-ups, are they oppressed? Hmm, well these women are attending university, will have the choice to work well paid jobs with their education, they seem strong and healthy and have experienced, I hope, that there is plenty of room for them to wear what they like while they do what they like.

I can't imagine that Canadian Muslim women like Monia Mazigh (wife of Maher Arar) could be oppressed whether tied in chains or wearing 16 hijabs. Its the person that matters not the clothes.

The problems that governments claim they are solving like the lack integration of Muslims and the oppression of Muslim women may be real problems. But bans are not a way to solve these problems.

As I watch the spread of these stupid, discriminatory laws I fear for Canadian Muslim women and all women who choose to dress according to religious teaching or women who choose to dress modestly. Its choice.

Good luck,

Amy, in Toronto, Canada.

I am so sorry and disgusted by everyone's ignorance about this topic. I have many Muslim friends and many wear hijab. It is your right to follow the tenets of your religion. A long as it is a woman/girl's choice and not a decision forced on them, why is it anyone's business. A lot of people
could benefit from a little more modesty.

Eid Mubarak.

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH MOST GRACIOUS MOST MERCIFUL.

DEAR SISTERS IN FRANCE,

First of all, I would like to express my support for the campaign u have launched to assert Muslim women s rights in France and my deep thanks for u determination to fulfil your religious duty.
ALLAH SAYS ABOUT HIJAB Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not annoyed..." (Qur'an 33:59)

I truly hope from Allah for the day when all believing women rush to cover their beauty with full contentment of their souls and desire for their deen is the strongest of desires. I pray that Allah guide us along the Straight Path, and protect from deviation after having guidance. And may Allah bless the leader of His Messengers, Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam), his family and his companions, and all who follow in their footsteps until the Final Hour, Ameen.

ON THE OCCASION OF RAMADAN , I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE YOU READ THE FOLLOING HADITH.MAY ALLAH REWARD FOR READING IT.

Prophet's Sermon on the Month of Ramadan “O people! The Month of Allah the High has come with blessings, mercy and forgiveness. To Allah, this month is the best month. Its days are the best days. Its nights the best of all nights. Its hours the best of all hours.

And this is the month which you have been invited to be the guests of Allah and you have become the graced ones by Allah.

Your souls sleep in it is worship. Your deeds in it are accepted. Your prayers in it are answered. So ask your Lord with truthful intentions and pure hearts that He would grant you success in fasting and reading His Book. For that the unfortunate is the one who forbids Allah’s forgiveness in this great month.

With your hunger and thirst remember the hunger and thirst of the Day of Judgment Give to your poor and needy. Respect the elder. Have mercy on the younger. Be nice and keep in touch with your relatives. Protect your tongues. Cast down from what is not Halal for your sights to see,
and what is not halal for your ears to hear. Be compassionate and caring for the orphans of other
people, so that your orphans would be taken care of and receive compassion. Repent from your sins. Raise your hands towards Him in dua during the hours of prayers , those hours are the best hours and Allah looks at His servants with mercy, answers their dua if they ask Him.

O people! Your souls are hostages by your deeds. So let yourselves free by asking Allah’s forgiveness. Your backs are heavy with loads, so make it light by prolonging your Sajdas. And know that Allah - Jalla Zikruh - has vowed to His Dignity that He would not punish those who pray and those who make Sajda. And he would not worry them with Fire on the Day which people rise to the Lord of the Universe.

O people! Whoever feeds fasting believer during this month, to Allah, it is as if he has freed a slave. And his past sins are forgiven.”

Then he continued “...whoever does one Fareedha (“religious deed”) during this month, it is as if he has accomplished doing 70 good deeds in other months. Whoever increases sending blessings on me, Allah will make his rewards heavy on the day which people’s rewards are light. Whoever
recites one Ayah of Qur’an will receive the reward of finishing the whole Qur’an in other months.

O people! The doors of Heaven in this month is open, so ask your Lord not to close it on you.
The doors of Hell are closed, so ask your Lord not to open it for you.
The devils are in chains, so ask your Lord that they do not rule you”

Assalaamoe Alaykoem

My name is Soraya Salie and I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I am a mother of two children. I have a son of eleven and a daughter who is nineteen and who is a second year medical student at the University of Cape Town.

Alghamdoe Lillaah my daughter does not have difficulty to wear hijab to University, but I on the other hand had much difficulty during the years of Apartheid to wear hijab to work. I understand completely the humliation and degradation my muslim sisters endure in Europe at this moment, particularly in France. My heart aches when I read in the media how the French muslimahs are constantly harassed. It was during one such moment that I decided to write this poem. My dua is that it bring a little comfort to my dear sisters in Islam who are affected by such unjust laws. Please forgive any mistakes.

HIJAB

Hijab, a new word acquired by the West, to mock and degrade womankind's best.

Hijab, you are my cover, my comfort, my veil,
Yet, you are more than that.

I don you with pride and great joy, because, YOU are what the Almighty, and not man, has commanded me to wear. No one will force me to discard you, this I swear.

Hijab, you are a veil,
Yet, you are more than that.

You conceal my adornments from man's roving eyes.
You keep me chaste and protect me from lies.

Hijab, you are a cover, a veil,
Yet, you are more than that.

You are a demonstration of a muslimah's obedience to her Creator,
but your true purpose is distorted by the wicked dictator.

Hijab, you are my veil, my companion,
yet, you are more than that.

Some say you are a symbol of women oppressed.
How wrong can they be!
The intellect cannot be confined by the hijab, on the contrary.

Hijab, you are my veil, my comfort,
Yet, you are more than that.

Those who oppose us say, reveal your bodies! Show that you are liberated!
Modesty and the veil is completely outdated!
No! not so! Hijab, you are the true liberator.
And yet, yet you are more than that!

And now I say a prayer for all my sisters in Islam

I pray for the doctors in hijab
The scientists in hijab
I pray for the lawyers and teachers in hijab
I pray for every sister in hijab

Stay steadfast and persevere
We need no one else when Allah is near

To those who mock and disobey, take heed!

Our hijab is our cover, our comfort, our veil,
Yet, it is more than that.

Assalam alai'kum,

I admire your dedication and determination on raising the true light of the hijab and fighting for the right of Muslim women who choose to practice this symbol of Islam.

I also want to give my gratitude and thanks on behalf of the rest of the Muslim
women who are not aware of this project, who myself was in this position until I came across the Prohijab website. Muslims and non-Muslim alike know that this is a vital issue which seems to be so controversial in the modern world and there is a
desperate need that the purpose and the significance of the hijab has to be addressed to the wider world, so much appreciation is to you who is doing the hidden campaigning.

To the Board of the Assembly for the Protection of Hijab Administration,

I would like to congratulate your establishment of the assembly and inform you that as Turkish Muslim Lawyers we support you and ready to contribute you by all possible means.

As an American civil rights activist, I want to thank you for creating an organization for the purpose of supporting freedom of religion for Muslim women. I began working for Muslim civil liberties shortly after 9-11 and even participated in the solidarity movement by wearing hijab for several months. When given the freedom to choose, hijab can express respect for oneself, devotion to God and of course modesty. My experience with Muslim friends has lead me to greater modesty. I am currently in my third summer of wearing only long sleeved shirts. (I had given up short shirts and pants a few years earlier.)

Once again, thank you for creating an organization to defend the rights of Muslim women worldwide.

"As an Orthodox (anti-Zionist) Jew, I strongly sympathize with religious Muslims on the belief in protecting the right of a woman to cover her hair with the hijab. Thank you very much on this website and hope that Allah will help every Muslim women to be strong and proud with her hijab. Islam sees a women whether single or married as an individual in her own right. There is something that I did read about hijab and think that you already did read something like that but it’s only a way to support you guys and know the every Muslim women have the right to put hijab, because in that way they
want a Muslim women to stop studying and not working and to make us feel that if you going o put hijab you going to be out of this world and be living alone in your home and after that they will tell you did you see what Muslim men do to their wife they don’t let them study and make them stay at home. also I would like to be on of you team in hijab ban. Hijab, Veil of Pride
"Let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms"

(Surah 24:31; 33:59).

It is the minimum standard of decency. No mention of face covering, in fact; sexual politics of individual men have seen to that. A Muslim woman is told: cover your nakedness, do not play with femininity as a commodity. Be proud and save your intimate best for the one who stands by you in times good and bad. Speak loud and clear, the game-and-promise bedroom voice does not belong on the streets, (Surah 33:32); Walk firm and tall: the swaying, jingling advertisement of body carries a "for sale" sign on it (Surah 24:31).
The Qur'an seeks clarity of heart and intention; its injunctions address the deception inherent in teasing and seduction, their signal or their unintentional message. Hijab is first a reminder far the soul, an inner code
and standard, and only second a physical statement.
Indeed the head-to-toe cloak (chador) is by no means unique to Islam; but a universal, spontaneous woman's choice throughout time, the dress of
high-born Roman and Byzantine ladies for centuries to indicate their elevated social status, set apart, "protected" from the labouring throng.
In the Qur'an, verses referring to the veil come in the context of the early
struggles of nascent Islam, when false believers were infiltrating the
infant Muslim community: Muslim ladies would be recognized at once, wearing a pragmatic veil of conduct affirming their belief in the Creator's (SWT) laws. Modesty of dress externalizes moderation of behaviour: the inner hijab, the moral affirmation of the bounds of decency, honesty, self-respect, honour, made visible. The veil continues to offer recognition and freedom to woman in many ways: it is a signal sent out which demands respect, and receives it in return. Thus did Allah (SWT) intend (Surah 33:59)."
