Re: School uniforms
As promised, a response:
"The local education authority offers guidance to schools on
suitable clothing, developed in consultation with faith groups. The
guidance includes the view that 'shalwar kameez', and 'hijjab' is
considered appropriately modest dress for Muslim pupils in school
uniform.
School governing bodies decide individual school uniform
requirements. Parents are advised of the school's uniform policy and
requirements before their children join the school, and information
on school uniform is circulated regularly and included in
home-school agreements. None of Tower Hamlets' schools include
"jilbab" or "full burkah" in their school uniform. Young women who
choose to wear this in public remove it when they arrive at school.
At the start of the school year, schools reinforce their policy and
wearing of correct school uniform. Where families raise any issues
with the school, these are followed through, working with parents to
reach an acceptable solution."
